Ace Frehley, the original lead guitarist and co-founder of KISS has passed away at the age of 74. 

According to Rolling Stone, the musician had been hospitalized following a fall last month which reportedly resulted in a brain bleed, meaning he had to cancel several upcoming performances. TMZ noted that he had been placed on life support prior to his passing.

Frehley’s family confirmed his death on Thursday (October 16), which occurred in Morristown, New Jersey, by releasing a heartfelt statement:

“We are completely devastated and heartbroken. In his last moments, we were fortunate enough to have been able to surround him with loving, caring, peaceful words, thoughts, prayers and intentions as he left this earth. 

“We cherish all of his finest memories, his laughter, and celebrate his strengths and kindness that he bestowed upon others. The magnitude of his passing is of epic proportions, and beyond comprehension. 

“Reflecting on all of his incredible life achievements, Ace’s memory will continue to live on forever!”

Known to fans as “The Spaceman,” Frehley helped launch KISS in 1973 alongside Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, and Peter Criss. While he left the band shortly after Criss in 1982, Frehley was instrumental in shaping KISS’ signature sound and image. He later rejoined the band for its 1996 reunion tour, and stayed with them til 2002. 

His guitar work can be heard on classics such as “Detroit Rock City,” “Strutter,” “Rock and Roll All Nite,” and “I Was Made for Lovin’ You.”
