OPINION: After Kim Kardashian released a line of Skims ‘face wraps’ designed to ‘sculpt the face’, I thought to myself, ‘enough is enough’.
Kim, who’s already known for her glamorous and unattainable beauty, is continuing to push unrealistic beauty standards for profit on vulnerable women across the world.
And it has become so unbelievably exhausting for those of us just trying to get by.
Nighttime face wraps have gained momentum online on apps like TikTok, and it looks like Kim saw a lucrative gap in the market and capitalised on the ever-growing list of beauty products women need to stay ‘youthful’ and ‘beautiful’.
She’s already a billionaire; she’s already A-list level famous. Why can’t she now use her platform to promote good? Why can’t she empower women rather than tear us all down on an exhaustingly continuous basis?
The constant push of these products on a rinse-and-repeat basis means we never feel enough.
Stop making women feel insecure about our bodies and our faces, and then sell us things to ‘help’ or ‘cure’ us.
Let’s encourage people to love the way they look. Let’s empower women to feel good enough in their skin. Let’s say no to these unrealistic standards that plague us on a regular basis.
You are perfect the way you are.
