A youth hockey game turned into an all-in scrap during an American Hockey League intermission on Saturday night.
The incident happened during the Hershey Bears vs Cleveland Monsters game, right in the middle of the Bears’ 'Mites On Ice' segment. That’s usually the wholesome bit where kids get a run around in front of a big crowd.
Instead, it went completely off the rails.
Video from the stands shows young players, believed to be eight and under, tackling each other to the ice, throwing punches, shoving, and skating into one another.
Full WWE spec.
What really raised eyebrows was the lack of immediate intervention. No referees or adults step in straight away, while spectators can be heard reacting in disbelief from the stands.
The kids involved are linked to the Central Penn Panthers Youth Ice Hockey club, which has since launched an investigation.
In a statement reported by The Athletic, the club said, “The safety, well-being, and positive experience of all participants, especially our young players, are of the utmost importance.”
The Atlantic Amateur Hockey Association went a step further, describing the incident as a “staged fight”, which is also being investigated.
I mean, who in their right mind would tee up children to get into a brawl? That’s all I’ll say…
The Hershey Bears didn’t mince words either, saying, “What occurred during last night’s youth scrimmage did not reflect the values of the sport or the standards we expect when young athletes are on the ice.”
Probably safe to say the next 'Mites On Ice' might come with a few more adults nearby.
