We’ve got plenty of native birds flying around Aotearoa, but it’s not every day we get a glimpse into their lives like this. You’ve heard of a bird bath, but have you ever seen a bird shower?
A video shared by Ōhiwa Headland Sanctuary shows a kererū making the absolute most of some wet weather - and for many people watching, including me, it’s a first.
“Ever seen a kererū wash its underwing? We certainly hadn’t before this!” the sanctuary wrote alongside the clip.
"This chunky boi was loving the rain, busy switching from one side to another, getting a good clean in."
Perched up on a powerline, the kererū lets the rain soak its feathers, even getting a good stretch in for each wing to make sure no feathers were missed in the wash.
The comments love the scene, with many using the opportunity to share some classic Kiwi humour.
“Ha, that’s weird, I thought they used Dove deodorant,” one person joked.
“Good hygiene is important,” another wrote. “Don’t want to ruffle anyone’s feathers.”
“I wish more people washed their pits like this good boy,” added a third.
While someone else said: “Today, the internet was worth it.”
It’s not the only time we’ve had an extra glimpse into the lives of our native birds.
Earlier this year, a Kawau Island resident found a feathered guest had moved into their garden shed.
Tucked into a corner of a shed, images show a North Island brown kiwi had created a makeshift nursery using a mix of plastic, paper and whatever else he could find.
Honestly, this is your reminder to pay more attention to the natural life around us, because you never know, you might just be able to catch moments just like these.
