Keir Starmer has announced he will resign as Prime Minister.
The 63-year-old politician was on the verge of tears as he confirmed on Monday morning that he had decided to step back from his position following mounting speculation.
"I will resign as leader of the Labour Party," he stated emotionally as he appeared outside Downing Street.
Describing his time as Prime Minister as the "proudest moment" of his life, Starmer added that he had "heard the answer" from his party in relation to his leadership and had accepted it "with good grace".
During his speech, the Prime Minister confirmed a new leader would be in place by September, as he promised to remain in No 10 until the leadership challenge was complete to "ensure an orderly handover of power".
"I will give my successor my full and unequivocal support knowing that they will inherit a Britain that is far stronger and fairer than the one I inherited two years ago, better prepared for the challenges ahead and better able to ensure the Labour Party secures a second term in office," he declared.
As he made the announcement, Starmer paid tribute to his "brilliant" staff and his wife Lady Starmer.
"I want to thank all of those friends and colleagues who have been at my side for the last six years or so, for their incredible commitment, service and support," he shared.
"I want to thank the brilliant No 10 staff and our country's extraordinary Civil Service who dedicate their lives to public service."
"When I leave the biggest job in the country, I shall spent more time on the most important job, being the best husband I can to my fantastic wife Vic, who has been a rock by my side through good times and bad, and being the best dad I can to my beautiful children, who are my pride and my joy," the visibly emotional leader continued.
Andy Burnham is currently the favourite to replace Starmer. He is expected to visit Westminster on Monday to be sworn in as an MP after winning the Makerfield by-election.
