A video of a cheeky kea thieving from a Kiwi family has gone viral again - and it’s equally beautiful and hilarious.
Alexandra Verheul and her family from Dunedin were holidaying in Fiordland back in 2022, hiking through the national park with their GoPro capturing the day.
What they didn’t expect was for a kea to nick the camera and take off, accidentally filming a stunning bird’s-eye view - literally - of the park.
Although, to be fair, how surprised could they really be? Kea are notorious for their mischievous behaviour.
In the clip, resurfaced this week by TikTok account @almost.world, the kea soared above the bushy hills with the GoPro rolling for a solid 30 seconds before landing and pecking at the lens.
The cheeky thing even captured a selfie as it attempted to tear the camera apart. The culprit flew off just as it was about to be caught red-beaked by the Verheul kids.
“I found it,” one of the boys shouted, before letting out a very excited “YES!”
Alexandra told Seven Sharp at the time: “I downloaded the footage onto my phone… it was amazing. It was totally unexpected."
People only just discovering the clip have taken the opportunity to make some brilliant comments.
One person joked: “Kea was like ‘Y’all want some drone footage?’”
“I thought it was only phones that can be put into flight mode 🤣," another added.
A third said: “How did they manage to find it? I can’t even find my keys.”
And, of course, someone couldn't resist to say: “Look out, National Geographic.”
Only in New Zealand, eh?!
