Josh Brolin has revealed that he almost quit Ridley Scott's new movie The Dog Stars due to his unusual filmmaking style.
The Dune actor, who previously worked with Scott on 2007's American Gangster, stars as the gun-toting neighbour of Jacob Elordi in the upcoming apocalyptic drama.
During an interview with Empire magazine, Brolin revealed that he got "really scared" and tried to back out of the project because Scott was "not really rehearsing" during their first rehearsal session in Italy.
"I went back, called my agent and said, 'I want out. Something's really wrong, and I've got to get the f**k out of here.' Luckily, my agent is a close friend, and he said, 'Rest for a day,'" he recalled. "I was like, 'No, man, I know what the f**k you're doing. It's not one of those day-things.' And I was right."
However, the No Country for Old Men star stuck with it and eventually got used to Scott's unconventional filmmaking process, which typically involves shooting a scene with multiple cameras from multiple angles at the same time.
After seeing playback of a scene he and Elordi had just finished, Brolin "started to feed off" the footage and eventually got "super into" the Gladiator director's methods.
"It took about a day or two for me to really embrace that, and then I got super into it, because it was stratospherically creative and stratospherically dangerous," he explained. "It was like, 'This is what I've been asking for, but now I'm getting it, I'm fighting it, because there's zero comfort in it.' It became one of the more creative, satisfying projects that I've ever been involved with."
The Dog Stars, which also stars Margaret Qualley, Allison Janney and Guy Pearce, will be released in cinemas on 26 August.
