Jason Momoa, the bloke who has his finger in a lot of pies, has opened up about how he ended up hosting Ozzy Osbourne’s Back to the Beginning farewell show, and why it absolutely terrified him.
The actor and proud metal fan talked about the experience while appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon last week, reflecting on the historic gig celebrating Black Sabbath and Ozzy’s final bow last July.
“He’s like a god to me,” Momoa said, speaking about Ozzy while looking at a photo of himself with Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne from the night.
Momoa explained he wasn’t even meant to be hosting at first, he was just trying to score tickets.
“I just called everyone I knew. I called Metallica and Anthrax just to get tickets so I could be there… I’m like, “Dude, I just need – me and my kids,” so I was just begging to get scraps,” he said.
That’s when rock photographer Ross Halfin rang with a message from Sharon Osbourne, asking if he’d host the show. Momoa had previously helped Ozzy out with music videos, and said anything Ozzy needs, he’s in.
“I was like, “Anything Ozzy needs, I’ll do it,” and so they probably just remembered that and she’s like, “I want Jason to host it,” Momoa said.
“I’m like terrified. Terrified.”
And you can see why. The stadium was packed with his heroes, Metallica, Guns N’ Roses, Tool, the lot. When Ozzy finally hit the stage, Momoa was standing right at his feet with his kids, quietly taking it all in.
“I loved [Ozzy] with everything,” he said.
The night also delivered peak Momoa behaviour. During Pantera’s set, he grabbed his son and headed straight into the mosh pit.
“He’d never been in a mosh pit and I said, ‘You’re going with me, boy,’” Momoa said.
Not bad for a bloke who just wanted tickets.
