James Hetfield proposes to girlfriend while scuba diving

James Hetfield is officially engaged.

The Metallica frontman popped the question to his girlfriend Adriana Gillett during an underwater scuba dive, holding up a sign that read: “Adriana Gillett, will you marry me?”

He shared a photo of the moment on Metallica’s social media yesterday (March 16), showing the pair floating beneath the sea, with the simple caption: “She said yes!”

Gillett also posted the photo to Instagram and revealed a bit more about how the whole thing went down.

The BEST birthday trip surprise,” she wrote. “Swimming with whale sharks on Friday the 13th with the most unique, special, and romantic proposal a Pisces could ever imagine. In a sea full of fish, we caught each other. Thank you God for putting us together.

Gillett was born in London and studied at the University of Oxford before starting her career in journalism, working as a reporter for The Times. She later moved into fashion and has spent several years working as a designer.

She’s also 16 years younger than Hetfield, and the pair reportedly started dating back in 2023.

It’ll be the second marriage for Hetfield, who was previously married to costume designer Francesca Tomasi from 1997 until their split in 2022.

The newly engaged Metallica frontman has a bit of time to enjoy the moment before work calls again. The band’s next show isn’t until May in Greece, kicking off another run of dates across Europe.

After that, Metallica head back to the US later this year for a residency at the Sphere in Las Vegas.

Safe to say that’s a proposal most of us probably couldn’t pull off even with cue cards.
