Nearly three decades on from Tupac Shakur's death, the actual car the iconic rapper was riding in when he was shot in Las Vegas is officially up for sale, and the price tag is wild.
The black 1996 BMW 750iL that was being driven by Death Row Records co-founder Suge Knight on the night of 7th September 1996 is now listed for US$1.75 million (approx NZ$3.03 million) at Celebrity Cars Las Vegas. It’s the first time the vehicle has ever been publicly displayed or offered for sale since that tragic night.
According to the listing, the V12-powered sedan has been meticulously restored to its original condition, including a fresh coat of paint and period-correct wheels replicating how it looked back in ’96.
There are still faint signs of its past, though, like a subtle exterior dent thought to line up with one of the bullet impacts and interior panels pulled back to reveal original weld marks where shots pierced the bodywork.
The story of this car is now part of hip-hop lore. After leaving the Mike Tyson vs Bruce Seldon fight at the MGM Grand, a drive-by shooting at a red light changed everything.
Tupac was hit multiple times and later died in hospital at just 25 years old. The case has remained high profile, with recent legal developments still keeping attention on the decades-old mystery around the shooting.
If you’re keen to make an offer on this piece of music history, you’ll need a US$20,000 refundable deposit and a signed confidentiality agreement before you can even start negotiating.
Whether you see it as a cultural relic or a controversial artefact, one thing’s certain: it doesn’t get much more iconic or haunting than this.
