Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi is set to embark on an official visit to New Zealand following high-level talks between the two nations.

The visit was confirmed following a meeting between India’s Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, and New Zealand’s Minister for Trade and Investment, Todd McClay. Meeting on the sidelines of the WTO MC-14, both ministers reviewed final preparations for the trip, which is being viewed as a major boost for bilateral relations.

A primary focus of the Prime Minister’s visit will be the progress of the India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (FTA). The Commerce Ministry stated that both sides are working to finalize a "substantial list of deliverables" to ensure the visit yields concrete economic results. To support this, a high-level Indian business delegation is expected to accompany the Prime Minister, with New Zealand planning to host a dedicated business forum to facilitate new commercial partnerships.

Beyond formal trade, the two countries are prioritizing "practical cooperation" in key sectors like agriculture. The Ministry highlighted plans to share New Zealand’s world-class expertise in horticulture with Indian growers. This initiative includes specific programs to train Indian farmers in advanced kiwi and apple cultivation techniques, aiming to modernize farming practices and improve crop yields in India through New Zealand’s technical knowledge.

Sports cooperation was also identified as a top priority for the upcoming visit. The ministers agreed that working together on sports science and athlete development is an effective way to build stronger ties outside of traditional trade rules. By focusing on areas like agriculture and sports, the Prime Minister's visit aims to create a broad partnership that offers direct benefits to citizens in both countries through shared expertise and cultural exchange.

The two ministers also used the meeting to align their positions on the World Trade Organization (WTO) and global trade challenges. India reaffirmed its commitment to a member-driven organization and discussed the moratorium on customs duties for electronic transmissions. As Prime Minister Modi prepares for his arrival, this diplomatic alignment signals a maturing relationship focused on both strengthening bilateral bonds and navigating the complexities of the modern global economy.
