Hot nights in Aotearoa hit different. You’re tossing, turning, and by 3am you’re basically a puddle wishing someone would invent air-con for your soul. Luckily, there are ways to survive the heat without turning your bed into a sauna.

First up, bedding matters. Swap flannelette or heavy duvet covers for breathable cotton sheets. Light-coloured sheets reflect heat, so leave the dark colours for winter.

Get a fan or portable AC. Position your fan near a window to pull in cooler air or angle it across the room to create a wind tunnel. Even a small breeze can make your skin feel like it’s on holiday.

Hydration is key, but pace yourself. A big glass of water before bed is fine, just don’t chug a litre or you’ll be up every hour like clockwork.

Cool your body with a lukewarm shower or splash your face with water before bed. Some people even freeze a water bottle and point it at the fan for instant chill vibes.

Dress light. Cotton pyjamas or nothing at all if you dare. Your body will thank you.

Follow these moves and you might just get a proper night’s kip instead of the usual sweaty struggle. And if it all fails, just embrace it. It's summer in Aotearoa, after all.
