It’s a question that’s divided households, ruined workplace kitchens, and made countless mugs of hot choccy either way too strong or criminally weak - how much Milo goes into making the perfect cup?
We could debate it forever, but Milo has finally settled this one.
Turns out, the official answer is… drum roll, please… THREE heaped teaspoons.
This whole stir-up over spoonfuls recently resurfaced when former PM Jacinda Ardern posted on Instagram saying she grew up being allowed only one or two teaspoons of Milo - only to be shocked to see the packaging now reckons you’re meant to use a whopping six.
“Is that an extreme Milo to liquid ratio?! Or is that the way it’s always been?," she asked.
Naturally, the internet lost it. Some backed the six-spoon suggestion, while others stood by the OG Kiwi way - measuring in heaped spoonfuls.
One commenter wrote under Jacinda’s post: “It’s 6 teaspoons when the parents aren’t around, 2 when they are 🙈.”
“Definitely 3 heaped for hot! Just fill the cup for cold 😂,” someone else added.
Even Kiwi musician Anika Moa chimed in, saying she likes it “2 heaped tablespoons with warm milk! That is the only way, lol.”
Nestlé New Zealand’s Head of Marketing, Fern Castellanos, says Kiwis are passionate about how they have their Milo.
“[Jacinda’s] now-famous post about Milo from abroad, served with six teaspoons, shocked the internet and left thousands of Kiwis reminiscing about their childhood memories and questioning their own Milo preparation rituals.”
That’s why the Milo team is keen to serve up some mugfuls of the correct “Kiwi way.”
To prove it, the Milo crew is setting up shop at Auckland’s Three Lamps this Tuesday, June 10th, handing out free hot or cold Milo made with the right measurements from 7am to 4pm - so you can taste-test the ratio yourself.
But at the end of the day, whatever your Milo method, you’re only gonna enjoy it how you like it - no judgement whether it’s six or two max.
The only debate left now is whether water deserves a spot in the mug. Give us your hot take on that one!
