Here are three words pretty much guaranteed to brighten up an average Tuesday: Free ice cream. In this economy? With the price of dairy? Yes, really.

Just in time to combat the seasonal depression that can come with the end of summer, Ben and Jerry's is bringing back its 'Free Cone Day', giving out unlimited scoops for free across the motu.

On Tuesday, 5th May, Kiwis are invited to line up at any participating store and get amongst - you can even jump back in line as many times as you like.

Whether you're a Chocolate Fudge Brownie fan or more Cookie Dough inclined, you can try 'em all. They even cater for the lactose-intolerant amongst us.

Free Cone Day started almost 50 years ago when founders Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield wanted to say thanks to the residents of the Vermont town who kept their shop going through winter with their loyal service.

Now it happens annually in 13 countries, and last year Kiwis got through 20,000 free cones, with Welly's Cuba Street store giving the most away.

There are seven Ben & Jerry's spots participating next week:
  • Christchurch, Oxford Terrace

  • Wellington, Cuba Street

  • Auckland, Hoyts Sylvia Park

  • Auckland, Ponsonby Road

  • Auckland CBD, Commercial Bay

  • Havelock North (NZ's newest Ben & Jerry's store), Te Mata Rd

  • Hamilton, Hoyts Te Awa

So if you live in one of these places, whether it's for smoko, in between meetings, on the school run or just a treat on your day off, get amongst and feed that sweet tooth.
