Harry Styles has paid tribute to his late One Direction bandmate, Liam Payne, with an unreleased acoustic song.

The singer debuted the song on stage at Madison Square Garden in New York City, where he is partway through a residency as part of his Together, Together tour.

The sold-out performance came on the second anniversary of Payne's death at 31, after he fell from a balcony at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

In a clip shared by Billboard, Styles told the packed house, "Two years ago today, I lost one of those friends. I'm sure a lot of you have been through similar things. I hope you haven't. But really, it's just about looking after each other."

The singer continued, "There are so many people who have touched my life in such special ways that I wouldn't be here without. I'm gonna play you a song I wrote for my friend about two years ago, if that's all right."

After introducing the song as What Is Enough, Styles launched into the melodic tune with lyrics that included, "I'm not wise enough/But I wrote you a letter just to burn it up/And watch it rise like you're in the sky."

Styles and Payne were original members of One Direction from the group's start in 2010 through to its end in 2015.
