The Happiest Countries in the World 2026 report is out - here's how NZ did

The 2026 World Happiness Report has officially dropped, and for a tiny little country, we reckon our spot on the list is worth a celebratory flat white or two.

The annual report, which ranks 140+ nations based on how people actually feel about their lives (rather than just how much money is in the government’s piggy bank), has been released. And the results are a bit of a mixed bag for the Land of the Long White Cloud.

Firstly, let’s look at the leaderboard. For the ninth year in a row, Finland has taken the top spot. They’re followed closely by the usual suspects: Iceland, Denmark, and - in a massive move for the Pura Vida movement - Costa Rica has jumped into the top five.

New Zealand has landed at a very respectable 11th place. On a global scale, that’s a podium finish in spirit.

If you look at the 'Anglosphere' (the countries that speak our version of English), New Zealand is officially the gold medalist. We’ve outranked:

  • Ireland (13th)

  • Australia (15th)

  • The USA (23rd)

  • Canada (25th)

  • The UK (29th)

That’s right - despite the price of a block of butter and the humidity, Kiwis are reporting higher life satisfaction than a helluva lot of the world. We’ve got social support, we’ve got freedom, and we’ve got enough green space to make a Londoner weep with envy.

And let's be honest: being four spots ahead of Australia is the only metric that truly matters in any trans-Tasman rivalry. It turns out that having more sunshine and bigger spiders doesn't actually buy you extra happiness points.

It’s not all victory parades, though. The 2026 report has highlighted a bit of a 'yeah, nah' trend for the youth. While our over-60s are living their absolute best lives (ranking in the Top 10 globally for their age group), the under-25s have seen a bit of a slide.

Researchers are pointing the finger at "doom-scrolling" and the constant pressure of social media. It turns out that spending six hours a day looking at people in Finland being "effortlessly happy" on Instagram is a bit of a buzzkill for the younger generation.

So, what’s the takeaway? We’re 11th in the world. We’re the regional champions of joy. We have the best coffee, the best scenery, and, according to the UN, a better vibe than nearly 130 other countries.

We’ve got 12 months of bragging rights secured. Next time your mate in Sydney tries to tell you how "lit" their lifestyle is, just gently remind them that the data doesn't lie: 11 is a smaller, better number than 15.

Stay happy, Aotearoa. We’ve got this.
