Hamilton Boys and Girls' kapa haka group go viral for 'hearty' haka and poi routines

“Amazing, can feel your ancestors in this!”

The rangatahi from Hamilton Boys’ and Girls’ High Schools weren't mucking around when it came to captivating the crowd during this year's Tainui Secondary Schools Kapa Haka Festival.

Their combined kapa haka rōpū Te Maurea Whiritoi were ready to defend their title, and let’s just say, they came out with mana.

Their performances have already gone viral on TikTok, with clips from both the haka and poi routines racking up tens of thousands of views and praise.

Known for their powerful stage presence and style that blends "old-school kapa haka" with "elegant" execution, the group placed third overall in the Toi Ora (Division A) section - but took out first place in almost every category including poi, haka and kākahu.

Ka pai also to their sister rōpū He Maurea i Whiria, who took out first overall in Toi Tupu (Division B).

Their poi routine had people hooked - with dynamic moves, tight coordination, and all the right energy. You genuinely feel the emotion and story in every beat and facial expression of both performances.

Commenters have praised the group for their performances, with one writing: “Amazing, can feel your ancestors in this 🖤💛❤️.”

“I love this haka. It pays tribute to our pioneers of kapa haka. old-school style but so elegant,” said another.

A third added: “This was way too harty, yo.”

An unreal effort from the rangatahi and plenty more where that came from. Ka pai!
