Guy Montgomery reveals his most awkward red carpet moment

If you’ve ever replayed an embarrassing moment in your head for years, Guy Montgomery is right there with you.

When Guy joined me on A Little Bit Extra, he took me right back to our days on Pick Me MTV (which I lovingly describe as “the most traumatising reality show ever”).

Guy made it all the way to the top five, but there was one challenge which would ultimately define his fate. Contestants were sent onto the Vodafone Music Awards red carpet with one mission: they had one chance to ask one celebrity one question to prove they had what it took to become an MTV host.

No pressure.

Guy spotted New Zealand singer Anika Moa and decided to kick things off with what he hoped would be a funny joke.

Instead… she completely walked past him.

“I was like, ‘Anika… who am I wearing?’” he laughed, recalling his attempt at being witty. Unfortunately, it didn’t land, and she kept walking.

Guy said he knew in that exact moment his chances were over.

It got even more brutal when the judges watched the footage back.

“They were like, ‘He’s lost Anika,’” Guy remembered.

It was like, this guy doesn’t have the mettle to be a host.

Ouch.

As if that story couldn’t get any better, life has a funny way of coming full circle.

Years later, Anika turned up as a contestant on 'Guy Montgomery’s Guy Mont-Spelling Bee', and Guy couldn’t resist telling her the story before filming began.

Her response?

She had absolutely no memory of it.

Honestly, that’s somehow even funnier.

It turns out the moment Guy has been carrying around in his brain for years barely registered for Anika at all, a pretty comforting reminder that the embarrassing moments we obsess over usually aren’t nearly as memorable to everyone else.

Thankfully, that awkward red carpet didn’t stop Guy. These days he’s one of New Zealand’s most beloved comedians and hosts, and Guy Montgomery’s Guy Mont-Spelling Bee has become an award-winning hit across New Zealand, Australia and the UK.

Safe to say the judges got that one wrong.
