He’s Back! Griffin’s announce the return of the iconic Cookie Bear

It’s been a long year without our beloved ‘dum-dee-doo’ singing Cookie Bear since Griffin’s announced the removal of him from its packaging.

This morning, Griffin’s shared that “after a year-long hibernation” the much-loved Cookie Bear will “re-join Griffin’s biscuit packets, continuing his nearly six-decade legacy as a feature of Kiwi pantries”.

“While Griffin’s knew Cookie Bear was loved by Kiwis, his time away revealed just how deep that connection runs,” they said.

“People described him as part of their childhood… a small but steady presence across generations.”

After 57 years, back in April 2025, Griffin’s decided to opt for a more minimalistic design to “refresh” packaging and “make it clearer and easier to find your favourite biscuits”.

The brown bear with his iconic bowtie has had a lasting impact on Kiwis. He was first created in the late 1960s, and even had his own fan club where you could receive a birthday card from him.

Naturally, fans were not happy about his departure.

“My childhood is slipping away from me, and I’m not ready to let go,” wrote one commenter.

“All fun and joy must be neutralised,” said another.

One supporter even launched a full-blown ‘Bring Back Cookie Bear’ petition for his return.

For those who felt the same, this morning’s good news has provided some relief to snack with happiness again!

Kiwis have already begun to share their excitement, with one commenter writing: “It’s a win for the people.”

“FINALLY A COMPANY WHO LISTENS TO THE CONSUMER,” wrote another.

“He’s a very special bear to us Kiwis. Thank you for listening,” commented a third.

The bear will return to his four original biscuits from this week - Chocolate Chippies, Hundreds & Thousands, Stripes, and Shrewsberry.

We’ll be keeping our eyes locked during our next supermarket shop!
