Green Day officially kicked off Super Bowl LX at midday, absolutely owning the opening ceremony, before the pre-game entertainment began.
The iconic opening performance began with the past NFL MVPs walking out, to celebrate 60 years of the Super Bowl.
They kicked off the performance with ‘Good Riddance’, getting the crowd off their feet. They transitioned into 'Holiday' and ‘Boulevard of Broken Dreams’, which had everyone screaming their lungs out.
The band concluded with ‘American Idiot’, getting all the MVPs up on the stage with them, as they rocked to the iconic tune.
It was bloody epic! Check it out for yourself:
The consensus on the performance has been pretty positive.
One fan wrote," Green Day playing American Idiot at the Super Bowl. 😍😍😍"
Another said they "loved" it, but wished "it were longer".
"That’s a statement start. Green Day set the tone right away for Super Bowl night. 👏🎸🏈," said another.
Contrary to what was expected, they didn't make any drastic political statements. Some expected a dig at Trump, or a cheeky change up of the lyrics in 'American Idiot'.
Rather, it was an epic celebration of 60 years of the Superbowl, and a great way to open the night.
When the announcement about their performance dropped, frontman Billie Joe Armstrong summed it up perfectly, saying the band was “super hyped to open Super Bowl 60 right in our backyard!”
The trio hail from Berkeley, California, just across the San Francisco Bay from Levi’s Stadium, which makes this about as close to a home game as the Super Bowl gets.
The Super Bowl appearance comes hot on the heels of an invite-only, Spotify-sponsored pre-Super Bowl party, which went down on Friday night.
That set leaned hard into the classics, with staples like ‘Boulevard of Broken Dreams’, ‘Basket Case’, ‘When I Come Around’, and ‘American Idiot’, plus a few deeper cuts thrown in for the diehard fans.
True to form, Armstrong didn’t shy away from politics during that show either, calling out U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and even tweaking some lyrics to take aim at the current state of America right now.
Green Day delivered exactly what the opening slot needed - tight, loud, and unapologetically themselves. The lads set the tone of an undoubtedly exciting and potentially historic night.
Next up is the big halftime show, where Latin artist Bad Bunny is set to make history as the first solo male performer to take to the stage with a primarily Spanish set.
Who will take out the Super Bowl for 2026? The New England Patriots are seconds away from taking on the Seattle Seahawks for the biggest day in American sports.
And any guesses for the colour of the annual Gatorade pour?! So much is still yet to come!
