'Grateful as': Ardie Savea tearfully reacts to 'overwhelming' support in move to Moana Pasifika

"I know in my heart it's the right decision."

Ardie Savea is tugging at our heartstrings with his move to play for Moana Pasifika.

After 10 solid years with the Hurricanes and a short stint in Japan, Ardie has recommitted to New Zealand Rugby through to 2027 where, starting next year, he will play out his Super Rugby season for the Pasifika team.

Stepping into a relatively new team - only in the Super Rugby scene since 2021 - Ardie knows the challenges that come with his move but is firm in his decision that it will be equally rewarding.

"I know that I'm going to an environment where I am going to learn and grow in areas that I may not have even considered. It will be challenging and rewarding, which is really exciting, but above all, I'm really keen to serve and help grow the legacy of Moana Pasifika," he said in a statement.

Since his announcement, a sea of support has flooded in for the rugby legend.

Moana Pasifika shared a clip of Ardie being surprised by a video montage from friends and whanau with words of encouragement and their tautoko behind his move.

Roger Tuivasa-Sheck massively congratulated Ardie on his announcement before Richie Mo'unga added: "You amaze me, man, and what you do for our game and our people."

Tonga's fullback and former All Black Charles Piutau said: "I know it's not easy, but I know the next generation will have it a lot easier because of you."

"You're going to do a lot of great things at this club," said NZ pro boxer Joseph Parker. Moana Pasifika chairman and former All Black Sir Michael Jones added: "You're honouring who you are, you're being true to who you are."

The message hit home for Ardie as he saw his mum, wife and kids on the screen. He tearfully shared: "It's nice to see different people and get affirmed . What people don't see is the quiet time, the struggle.

Loads of fans got in behind him as well with one writing: "Rooting for you all the way! Gotta village behind you šŸ©µšŸ¤§?."

"For this man, it's more than just rugby and the game. He's a leader, he's real and he's for his people and his culture. Now that's a leader," said another.

While a third agreed: "Rewriting the script šŸ. What many had wished for in their time, you have chosen to do in yours. šŸ©µšŸ’™šŸ§” lesgoo MOANA"

The support is across codes too. Brisbane Bronco Alex Glenn said: "The athlete kids these days should all be idolising and wanting to be more like... one of the greatest role models in sport and for all the right reasons."

Ardie, we can't wait to see what you do. You're doing your culture proud, brother!
