The tragic and horrifying murder of Grace Millane in 2018 is a moment still etched into the hearts of many across Aotearoa, but her memory is still providing a powerful sense of hope.
The 'Love Grace Handbag Appeal New Zealand' was established by Grace’s family in the UK in 2019 to honour her life by bringing light to a devastating tragedy.
Combining Grace’s love for handbags with a mission to support those in need, the initiative focuses on helping women who are escaping domestic violence.
Now in its fifth year, this volunteer-driven appeal serves as a “tangible symbol of community” care. Between Valentine’s Day and International Women’s Day, New Zealanders across the country donate handbags filled with new toiletries and essential hygiene items.
These bags are then distributed to Women’s Refuges nationwide, where they are gifted directly to women and children who have often fled violent homes with nothing but the clothes on their backs.
According to a press release, “the handbags serve a dual purpose: providing immediate dignity through essential supplies while offering a message of love and empowerment.”
Each bag acts as a welcoming gift to remind these women “that they are valued, supported, and never judged by their community.”
The need for such support in New Zealand is significant. According to Women’s Refuge NZ, the country has one of the highest rates of family violence in the OECD, with an average of 71 crisis calls made every single day.
With around 50,000 women and children referred to refuge services annually, this appeal offers a small but vital bit of relief during their darkest moments.
Grace’s legacy continues to grow through this kindness, ensuring that her name is forever linked to the protection and empowerment of women across Aotearoa.
