From Kanpur to Auckland: Rajesh Krishnamurthy Unveils Debut Indo-Kiwi Novel

Author Rajesh Krishnamurthy has officially released his debut novel, Between Curry Leaves and Kauri Trees, marking his entry into published fiction with a cross-cultural story that bridges India and New Zealand.

Speaking on The Breakfast Show with Vijay & Pooja, Krishnamurthy shared an exclusive inside look into the development of the book, which took eight years to complete.

"I've been writing since childhood, but turning it into a full novel required a complete mindset shift," Krishnamurthy said. "Over the years, I kept rewriting sections until I finally decided to push forward and finish it."

An Indo-Kiwi Romance

The novel follows a young student from Uttar Pradesh, India, who relocates to New Zealand and falls in love with a local Kiwi woman. The story tracks their initial bond, subsequent separation as life takes them on different paths, and an eventual unexpected reunion years later in Auckland.

The book's title reflects its themes:

• Curry Leaves: Symbolizing Indian culture and heritage.

• Kauri Trees: Representing New Zealand’s native landscape.

Krishnamurthy noted that while the characters and narrative are fictional, the background draws inspiration from his own roots in Kanpur as well as familiar Auckland landmarks, including Parnell cafes.

Official Launch and Next Projects

The book was officially launched on February 14, 2026—a date selected to coincide with Valentine's Day and as a personal dedication to his wife on her birthday.

Between Curry Leaves and Kauri Trees is currently available worldwide via Amazon. Krishnamurthy confirmed he has already begun work on a second standalone novel focusing on relationships and human connection.
