Former Mastodon guitarist Brent Hinds dies aged 51

He was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident.

Brent Hinds, Mastodon’s former guitarist and co-founding member, has died at the age of 51.

Hinds was tragically killed on Wednesday night (August 20) in a motorcycle accident, when his Harley Davidson collided with an SUV in Atlanta, Georgia.

According to a police report, the “BMW SUV failed to yield while making a turn at the intersection,” which resulted in the fatal crash, Atlanta News First reports.

Hinds co-founded Mostodon in 2000, alongside guitarist Bill Kelliher, drummer Brann Dailor, and bassist Troy Sanders, and remained in the band until earlier this year (2025).

Earlier this year in March, the band announced that they had “mutually decided to part ways” with Hinds, but in recent weeks and months, the former guitarist slammed his former bandmates, saying he was kicked out of the band.

Speaking about their former bandmate’s passing, the band posted a statement saying they are, understandably, in a state of “unfathomable sadness and grief.”

The statement, posted to social media read, “last night Brent Hinds passed away as a result of a tragic accident. We are heartbroken, shocked, and still trying to process the loss of this creative force with whom we’ve shared so many triumphs, milestones, and the creation of music that has touched the hearts of so many.

“Our hearts are with Brent’s family, friends, and fans. At this time, we please ask that you respect everyone’s privacy during this difficult time. RIP Brent.”

Hinds performed on all eight of Mastodon’s critically acclaimed albums, playing a huge role in shaping the band’s sound and success. During his time with the band, Mastodon earned several awards, including a Grammy in 2018 for Best Metal Performance with their song Sultan’s Curse.

Rest in Peace, William Brent Hinds.
