Fiji and New Zealand Book Spots at 2027 FIFA U-17 World Cup

Fiji and New Zealand have officially become the first two nations to qualify on the pitch for the 2027 FIFA U-17 World Cup™, joining host nation Qatar in the expanded global tournament.

Both sides stamped their tickets with semi-final victories at the ongoing OFC U-16 Men’s Championship in Port Moresby, setting up a gold-medal clash on Saturday.

Fiji Defeats Solomon Islands in Shootout Thriller

In a tense opening semi-final, Fiji earned their place on the world stage after a dramatic 4–2 penalty shootout victory over the Solomon Islands following a goalless 90 minutes.

Chances were few and far between during regulation time, with the closest attempt coming late in the first half when a deflected strike from Solomon Islands forward Gregy Gau struck the woodwork. With neither side able to break the deadlock, the tie went straight to a penalty shootout.

Fiji goalkeeper Kirikiti Biu emerged as the hero, pulling off two vital saves to put the Baby Bula Boys in control. Substitute Maikeli Ratuove then stepped up to coolly slot home the decisive spot-kick.

The victory marks Fiji's third consecutive U-17 World Cup qualification—all achieved under the stewardship of head coach Sunil Kumar.

Pietersen Hat-Trick Powers New Zealand Past Hosts

In the second semi-final, continental juggernauts New Zealand proved too strong for host nation Papua New Guinea, overcoming a resilient first-half defense to cruise to a 3–0 win.

After a frustrating, scoreless opening 45 minutes, the Junior All Whites broke through five minutes after the restart:

• 50'— Davi Valle Dos Santos beat three defenders on a brilliant solo run before squaring the ball for Cruz Pietersen to tap in at the far post.

• 60'— Pietersen doubled the lead, finishing off a pinpoint cross from Jack Clegg.

• 90+4'— Pietersen completed his hat-trick deep in stoppage time after being set up by substitute Tristan Bancroft.

The 15-year-old Pietersen, who spent time training with English club Bournemouth last year, capped off a dominant performance that sends New Zealand to their 11th consecutive U-17 World Cup.
