Kiwis remind each other about a fifth hidden season of NZ weather

"Shitsville is coming..."

We can see the summer’s daylight at the end of the tunnel, and boy, are we glad after what felt like the longest winter of our lives (yes, we say that every year).

But some Kiwi Redditors have loudly pointed out there’s actually a fifth season we always forget about - 'Shitsville'.

Okay, so no, it’s not an official season (obviously), but it manages to catch us off guard every year.

A post on the Wellington Reddit page broke it down perfectly, showing how the year really plays out for us Kiwis - and why we’re still holding out for those proper calm sunny days a little longer.

'Shitsville' sits between two halves of spring, running from mid-September through to mid-December.

As one Redditor described it - “It’s more of winter, but it feels worse because we’ve had that taste of spring.”

Wellingtonians in particular know it well for its chill and gusty winds that come right on the back heels of winter.

“Usually we’ll get regular strong/severe winds significant enough for MetService to issue alerts at least once a week,” one local explained.

“And how accurate it is,” another said.

A third agreed: “It may be a piss-take, but it is always bang on.”

Some jokes rolled in, too.

“Such an important reminder, thank you. I always get a little too optimistic during Spring 1,” someone wrote.

I personally had a good giggle at “Shitsville is coming.”

And a classic: “I’m enjoying the calm before the shit.”

It’s a good reminder there’s still a wee way to go - but once singlet weather finally settles in, we’ll be stoked.

And then, knowing us, we’ll be whinging about how hot it is. Swings and roundabouts, aye?
