A live TV interview took a very, ahem, unexpected turn this morning after a North Canterbury farmer revealed the unusual piece of equipment he keeps on him.

Mat Bailey, organiser of the North Canterbury Hunting Club’s Feral Cat competition, was chatting with TVNZ 'Breakfast' host Tova O’Brien when she noticed something poking out of his jacket pocket.

“It’s not a cat’s tail, is it?” she asked.

Turns out it was… kinda.

Bailey pulled out what appeared to be an adult toy, explaining he uses it as a “microphone”.

“I sort of use this on the day,” he explained - which we’re hoping means as his microphone for commentating (however that works).

After a few confused questions from a stunned O’Brien, Bailey clarified: “I got this microphone. It’s a cat tail microphone,” he said, proudly holding the object up to the camera.

He explained he keeps it in his jacket pocket for “safe keeping” and uses it while commentating.

When O’Brien asked whether it was real, Bailey revealed it was a much cheaper purchase.

“I got that off AliExpress for $14 if you’re interested,” he joked. “It’s a good deal.”

And that wasn’t the only surprise Bailey had for the interview.

According to Stuff, Bailey admitted he was battling a hangover and held up a beer to explain his recovery method.

“Instead of hair of the dog we call it hair of the cat,” he said.

“I just had another one, so a couple more of them and then I’ll go and do some work probably.”

It seems they’re a bit of a different breed down south.

This isn’t the only TV interview that has had us cracking up.

Back in 2023, Kiwi comedian Melanie Bracewell found herself mortified after dropping an F-bomb on Aussie TV show 'The Cheap Seats'.

While interviewing Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Mel let the F slip after asking the world leader to sign her citizenship papers.

Just like that moment, Bailey’s little jokes left viewers in hysterics - and a little bit shocked.

And as all good TV bloopers do, it’ll live on the internet forever!
