Every wedding needs a bride, a groom, and Middle-earth's ultimate ring bearer, Frodo Baggins.

'Lord of the Rings' star Elijah Wood has been visiting New Zealand for Auckland's Armageddon Expo, but on a day trip to Matamata, he decided to visit his old neighbourhood, Hobbiton.

While there, he happened to stumble upon the wedding of Rotorua couple Jess and Sharik, who were in the middle of signing documents.

Photographer Cath Ullyett explained on her Instagram that Elijah and his family were being escorted past the ceremony garden "and had stopped to watch."

After the couple had finished signing, I rushed around to meet him and asked him to come and have a few photos with the couple. Being the gentleman he is, he didn’t want to interfere, however with some friendly encouragement he stepped in and was welcomed by all.

The wedding party were clearly surprised and more than happy to pause the ceremony for a quick hello and photos in front of the infamous Shire door.

Cath dubbed him the "best wedding crasher ever," and confirmed, "he is a genuinely kind and gracious person. Was really cool to meet him."

LOTR fans online were clearly in awe of the moment, saying the couple was "so lucky" and how "unbelievable" a moment it was.

"That’s like getting married in a church and Jesus walks in," one fan pointed out.

And, of course, some fans couldn't help but joke that he was probably just there to steal the ring. But in Frodo's defence, they are just standing on his front lawn...
