Ed Sheeran has sent shockwaves through the global music scene with an unexpected leap into Bollywood, teaming up with megastar Shah Rukh Khan for "Tu Mil Jaaye," the first official track from Khan's upcoming action-thriller,King.
The song, which also features playback powerhouse Arijit Singh and vocalist Madhubanti Bagchi, has triggered massive international excitement—with New Zealand emerging as one of its biggest hotspots. Across Kiwi airwaves, particularly among loyal Humm FM listeners, the track has exploded into one of the most requested and heavily played anthems within days of its debut, proving the crossover's immense appeal Down Under.
Taking to Instagram on Tuesday, Sheeran lifted the lid on how the midnight collaboration came together at Khan's famed Mumbai residence, Mannat.
"When I first met Shah Rukh, he said I must make a song to be in his next movie and also be my first Bollywood song," Sheeran wrote. "We've got to know each other over the years and I love him. Last time I was in India, I went to his house to get him to shoot a cameo in the Sapphire music video for me and Arijit Singh. He introduced me to Sachin-Jigar that day, and I wrote and recorded my verse for Tu Mil Jaaye for his movie King that night. I love that Arijit is singing on it with me too, all my favourite people on one project."
Directed by Siddharth Anand and scored by composer duo Sachin-Jigar,Tu Mil Jaaye offers the first glimpse into the world of King, which promises a gritty, dark thriller aesthetic. Alongside Shah Rukh Khan, the high-octane ensemble includes Suhana Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Deepika Padukone, Arshad Warsi, and Rani Mukerji.
With King scheduled to arrive in cinemas on December 24, "Tu Mil Jaaye" is already setting records and dominating airwaves across New Zealand and the globe.
