There’s a fruit sitting on Kiwi supermarket shelves right now that’s going for a whopping $95-$120… EACH!
Durian is a spiky Southeast Asian delicacy that’s been having its moment online for years thanks to its odd - and kind of disgusting - reputation.
It's well known for being a "stinky" fruit - people compare the smell to rotten onions, sewage and gym socks. But Durian apparently tastes like sweet, creamy custard - which, honestly, is a little unsettling in itself.
Still, it’s getting attention and has now hit supermarket shelves here in NZ. It might not always be for the best reasons, but it’s easily one of the most talked about fruits in the world.
One NZ Reddit user spotted a bunch of durian at their local Pak'n'Save going for an eye-watering $95.
“In this economy! We were behind a guy at the checkout buying one,” they wrote. “I asked if they were nice, he shrugged and said he’d never had one. High roller!”
Others have shared their finds at other stores including Costo NZ, where durian is sitting at $99.99.

To be fair, these things are MASSIVE. But still… that’s a lot of coin to drop on something another commenter described as “tasting like vomit and smelling like death warmed up”.
So why all the fuss? In many parts of Asia, durian is considered the “king of fruits”. People are obsessed - scooping it straight from the shell, blending it into milkshakes, and even making desserts out of it like durian brûlée.
Even Robert Irwin gave it a crack last year. He claimed to love it, but the gagging in between sentences suggesting anything but enjoyment.
So whether you’re a durian lover or just curious enough to give it a go, make sure your savings account is ready for the splurge you’ll face at the checkout.
Oh, and good luck, you’re braver than me!
