Duncan Sheik hospitalised: 'critical but stable'

Duncan Sheik has been hospitalised and is in a critical but stable condition.

The news of the singer and composer's ill health comes via his official Instagram page, which shared a message on Wednesday night, seemingly on behalf of the musician's family.

"We would like to share an update with Duncan's fans and the public. Duncan is currently receiving medical care and remains in critical but stable condition. Out of respect for Duncan and our family, we will not be sharing any further medical details at this time."

The statement concluded, "We kindly ask for privacy during this incredibly difficult time and will provide updates when appropriate. Thank you for the continued love and support."

TMZ reported that Sheik, who is known for his 1996 Grammy-nominated smash Barely Breathing, is currently receiving care in a New York City hospital.

Sheik progressed from songwriting into the world of musical theatre in 2006 with his Broadway show Spring Awakening, co-written with Steven Sater. The coming-of-age rock musical won eight Tony Awards and featured stars-in-the-making Jonathan Groff and Lea Michele.

His new musical, Memoirs of Amorous Gentlemen, is set to begin performances Off Broadway later this month. Spring Awakening is also being revived for a major Off Broadway production in November.
