After six seasons and two movie spin-offs, Downton Abbey might be making a comeback!
Rumours are swirling that the beloved period drama about the Crawley family, a wealthy aristocratic clan, is set to return after an eight-year hiatus from the original TV series.
While there hasn't been an official confirmation from the cast and crew, a source has revealed to the Daily Mail that there's "a lot of excitement about" the potential comeback and reports there are plans to bring back the stars of the original series.
Speaking to the news outlet, one source said: "There is a plan which is in development."
"There is casting taking place, and it would be great if all of the big stars can return. People loved Downton. It became a British institution and it has been much missed since it left our screens."
"There is huge excitement around this project. It was a Sunday night favourite and got huge viewing figures. There has been very little to compete with it ever since it ended."
While it's still unconfirmed whether the original cast members, such as Hugh Bonneville, Michelle Dockery, and Elizabeth McGovern, will reprise their roles, it's expected that the show's creator, Julian Fellowes, will continue as the showrunner.
Although the alleged project is still in its early stages, reports suggest that a new series could potentially air later this year, depending on the availability of the cast amidst their other filming commitments.
But despite the strong rumours, Downton's executive producer Gareth Neame and the British network ITV have yet to comment.
While we await official confirmation, this news gives us the perfect excuse to indulge in a Downton Abbey binge-watch!
The last time we saw the Crawleys was in the second film 'Downton Abbey: A New Era' which was released last year and starred Hugh Bonneville, Michelle Dockery and Maggie Smith from the TV series, alongside new faces Hugh Dancy, Laura Haddock, Nathalie Baye and Dominic West.
