Ahmed Al Ahmed, the heroic shopkeeper who put one of the Bondi shooters in a headlock and wrestled the rifle out of his hands, is set to receive millions in donations.
Footage of the 43-year-old's courageous act, which undoubtedly saved many lives, has gone viral around the world - and now a GoFundMe has been created for people to show their gratitude.
Al Ahmed was shot five times during the terror attack and has been undergoing multiple surgeries in a bid to save his left arm.
At the time of writing, the GoFundMe page has received over $1.7m, with nearly 30,000 people donating.
American billionaire William Ackman gave $99,999 - the top amount GoFundMe accounts can spend - and more donations are rolling in every minute. Car Hub Australia started the page, giving $50,000 to "honour this absolute hero and help support him through recovery, and the lasting impact of this traumatic event".
"In a moment of chaos and danger, he stepped forward without hesitation," the GoFundMe blurb reads.
"His actions were selfless, instinctive, and undeniably heroic, taken without regard for his own safety. Early reports indicate he was shot twice in the process while protecting others.
Al Ahmed is a Syrian Muslim who migrated to Australia and became a citizen in 2022. His cousin Jozay Alkanj was with him at the time of the shooting, and told the Sydney Herald that Al Ahmed said, "I’m going to die, please see my family and tell them that I went down to save people’s lives,” before rushing the gunman.
Another page set up in loving memory of 10-year-old victim Matilda Bee Britvan has raised over $400,000.
"I was Matilda’s language teacher, and I knew her as a bright, joyful, and spirited child who brought light to everyone around her," wrote Irina Goodhew, who started the page.
"While celebrating Hanukkah, her young life was tragically taken. Her memory will live on in our hearts," she added, noting all funds raised will be transferred directly to Matilda's mother.
"Matilda was a bright and loving soul who taught us that true goodness is in the love and compassion we share. Her memory reminds us to carry kindness in our hearts and spread it to the world."
