Dolly Parton's sister has asked for prayers as the country music legend continues to recover from recent health problems.

Freida Parton, one of Dolly's five sisters, posted to Facebook that she has been praying for her sister, and implored others to join her.

"Many of you know she hasn't been feeling her best lately," the singer, songwriter and musician said.

"I truly believe in the power of prayer, and I have been led to ask all of the world that loves her to be prayer warriors and pray with me."

Dolly postponed her first Las Vegas residency in more than 30 years late last month, saying she was dealing with health challenges.

The shows were set to mark a major moment in her long and glittering career, with fans from around the world eager to see her return to the stage.

In her statement, she joked, "It must be time for my 100,000-mile check-up, although it's not the usual trip to see my plastic surgeon!" Her trademark humour reassured many of her fans that she was still in good spirits, even as she took time to rest and recover.

Prior to that, Dolly also missed the announcement of the latest ride at her theme park, Dollywood, a rare absence for the singer, who usually plays a hands-on role in major park events.

Freida did not detail exactly what health concerns the singer may be facing, but Dolly has shared elsewhere that she has had issues with kidney stones and other ailments in the past.

"She's strong, she's loved, and with all the prayers being lifted for her, I know in my heart she's going to be just fine. Godspeed, my sissy Dolly," Freida concluded.

"We all love you!"
