Do you know how to indicate leaving a roundabout? Seems like LOTS of Kiwis don't

As the great return to work continues for Kiwis post-summer break, more cars are on the road during rush hour times, which - let's be honest - means more bad driving.

Frustration has well and truly kicked in for one Reddit user, who started a mass debate about indicating at roundabouts.

Sounds simple enough - but the virality of this post shows how much confusion (read: f*ckery) happens at the humble roundabout, and how many people need to get up close and personal with a copy of the Road Code.

We have all had it happen to us. You are sitting at a roundabout, waiting for someone because they're indicating right, only to watch them roll straight through the roundabout. Cue internal screaming.

"PSA: Indicate LEFT when exiting a roundabout", the post on the New Zealand subreddit was titled.

"Don't indicate right if you are going straight through. Indicate LEFT. Yes, LEFT. Why is this so difficult for a lot of drivers to understand?" the user asked.

Hundreds of commenters agreed, with one writing:  “The WORST when they indicate right going straight.. slows everyone down.”

"Nearly got into a crash with someone because they didn’t understand the concept of this," said another.

One user suggested: “They (the drivers) will continue to drive this way because there is little to no punishment for it."

And before you go slamming Auckland drivers, these cases of wrong indication are happening across the country, with users commenting from Southland to the Far North sharing their experiences. Some reckoned they even saw cops doing it.

One commenter claimed the rule was only "formally codified" in 2004, and before that, there was no official rule, only recommendations, which could account for some of the roundabout shitshows this post references. Another in defense of poor indication technique said, "My driving instructor taught me to do it that way. I don’t anymore." Despite the passion shown in the thread, one user made a fairly good point that this issue might not be high on the list of priorities when it comes to driving problems in NZ.

"I just want people to be able to merge without trying to get ahead of 3 cars”.

Just to put the issue to bed once and for all -  NZTA’s website states: “When riding straight on at a roundabout, don’t signal before entering the roundabout. Signal left when you pass the exit before the one you want."

So there you have it. Be honest - have you been doing it wrong this whole time? And if you're one of the ones losing the plot watching OTHERS do it wrong, just know you're not alone.
