Dave Grohl has recently been officially recognised for his years of helping feed homeless people in Los Angeles.
For years, the Foo Fighters frontman has worked a bunch of shifts alongside various community groups, like Hope of the Valley Rescue Mission and Feed the Streets LA, cooking up meals for people doing it tough on the streets of LA.
Earlier this year, on his 56th birthday, Grohl marked the day by firing up the grill to feed people who’d lost their homes in the LA wildfires.
Over the weekend (October 18), Dave and his wife Jordyn Blum attended the annual Hope in the City of Angels gala at BMO Stadium, where he was honoured by Hope The Mission for his ongoing volunteer work and big-hearted generosity.
This also marked the first time Grohl has attended an event with his wife since he revealed he’d fathered a baby outside of wedlock back in September 2024.
In a statement, Hope The Mission said:
“Long regarded as one of the most respected and prolific presences in modern music, Dave Grohl has been equally passionate in his offstage service to his local community. Without fanfare, Dave has volunteered for days at a time, preparing and serving meals to people experiencing homelessness and food insecurity.
“At this year’s gala, we honour him for inspiring advocacy on behalf of the less fortunate in his backyard, just as his music has provided hope and solace for fans the world over.”
When Grohl took the stage to accept the award, he shared how it all started - with a simple idea and a BBQ.
“We’ve got a studio in Northridge, and one freezing February I noticed how many people were out on the street,” Dave said. “I'd cooked before for charities and for fundraisers and things like that, which is always great. But I was looking at these people that needed to eat and I'm, like, 'What the fuck?' Let's make some food and give it to the people.”
So he did exactly that. Grohl rocked up to Hope The Mission’s HQ and asked how to help. Next thing, he’s in the carpark flipping meat and serving plates.
"There's something about the simple human interaction of handing someone a plate of food that needs food. When you ask them if they'd like beef or pork, and they say, 'Both, please.' And you give them both, and they say, 'God bless you,' they mean it.”
He later added, "There is something simple and beautiful about that simple interaction, which is showing love and care and compassion for another human being. But it's also really good to barbecue."
Elsewhere in the speech, Grohl thanked his wife Jordyn for “her grace and inspiration.”
“Ya know, I come home from these cooks smelling like a fireman and barbeque sauce. I’d like to thank her for inspiring me to do better,” he said.
