Slipknot frontman Corey Taylor and Halestorm’s Lzzy Hale joined an all-star band recently, to perform Black Sabbath classics at a tribute show honouring Sabbath bassist Geezer Butler and Free singer Paul Rodgers.
The moment went down at the Sound & Vision Awards in Palm Springs on March 2, where the two heavy hitters helped turn the night into a proper rock mash-up, orchestrated by former Guns N’ Roses drummer Matt Sorum.
The lineup was stacked. Butler himself was on bass, joined by Rodgers on vocals, Extreme guitarist Nuno Bettencourt and former Deep Purple bassist/singer Glenn Hughes (who briefly fronted Black Sabbath in the mid-80s), and Matt Sorum.
One of the big highlights saw Taylor step up to lead vocals for Black Sabbath’s 1970 classic Paranoid, with Butler laying down the iconic bassline behind him. Not a bad bloke to have backing you up on a Sabbath tune.
Then Hale took over the mic for a powerful take on the band’s 1980 track Neon Knights, again with Butler on bass.
We’ve also seen a clip of Taylor, Sorum, and Billy Idol’s guitarist Steve Stevens taking on War Pigs.
The supergroup also performed Free’s 1970 hit All Right Now, with Rodgers, Hughes, Taylor, Hale and Halestorm guitarist Joe Hottinger all sharing vocal duties.
The event was organised by Adopt The Arts, a non-profit founded by Sorum that supports music education in schools with proceeds from tickets and a rock memorabilia auction going straight to the charity.
We didn’t have a Slipknot, Halestorm, Black Sabbath crossover on the bingo card, but certainly not a bad way to celebrate a couple of rock legends.
