Consumer NZ reveals the worst laundry detergents and those that actually work

Are your clothes actually getting clean?!

Consumer NZ has thrown 46 laundry detergents for spin to determine which will power through your grottiest of washes and which aren’t doing much more than a rinse.

Two products, Shotz Laundry Liquid and EcoLiving Laundry Detergent Sheets (lavender scent), scored a shocking 27 out of 100.

The same score was given to a plain water-only wash. At that point, you could say you're washing your dollars away.

Re-Stor Laundry Detergent Sheets, specifically the fresh linen scent, wasn’t any better, with a score even lower.

These were officially rated poor at removing the kind of stains we all deal with day-to-day grass, tomato sauce, olive oil, and the usual day-to-day drips and spills.

“They only weigh a couple of grams,” said Consumer NZ’s head of testing, James Le Page. “So they just don’t pack the same punch as your go-to scoop of powder or slosh of liquid.”

But it’s not all bad news for your dirty socks. If you’re a Persil user, you’re the cleanest of the bunch.

The Persil Ultimate Powder took out the top spot with a whopping score of 94. Persil Active Clean and Persil 3-in-1 capsules are right behind with 92 and 89 out of 100.

They aren’t the only ones getting the job DONE - ten additional products walked away with ‘Consumer Recommended’ badges, including some locally made, like Laundromate (79) and Ecostore (77).

If you’re after a clean that won’t rinse your wallet, Ecostore Ultrapower Citrus Fresh came in at just 8c per wash.

So, next time you're staring down 50 options at the supermarket, you can know that what you’re grabbing actually works.
