Australian singer Cody Simpson has revealed he’s been dealing with a serious vocal cord injury that’s forced him to cancel performances and step away from singing while he recovers.
Sharing the update with fans online, Cody explained that just over a month ago, doctors discovered “a serious hemorrhage” on one of his vocal cords after he unknowingly kept singing through a sinus infection while recording music in the studio.
“It occurred due to my overzealousness in the studio singing through a sinus infection I didn’t know I had,” he wrote.
“Assumed it was just fatigue and kept showing up to the studio until one day I could no longer sing properly.”
The injury has meant weeks of vocal rest, with Cody revealing he’s had to cancel TV and radio appearances promoting his latest release, ‘Baby Blue’.
“This has also affected my ability to complete the album and polish up the next singles.”
Doctors have now prescribed him another two weeks of complete silence in hopes of avoiding surgery, which Cody says would require a much longer recovery process.
Despite not being able to sing at all right now, the ‘Pretty Brown Eyes’ singer says he’s still finding ways to create music.
“I’m back in the studio now writing strictly as a lyricist on mute with my collaborators, and hearing/writing my vocal melodies on my guitar (which I will eventually replace with my voice when I’m able to).”
Where there’s a will, there’s a way.
Cody also opened up about the “extremely up and down” emotional toll it’s taken on him, but says he’s trying to see the silver lining in it all.
“I’m now reframing this as a realignment for the long-term good,” he said.
He finished the message by asking fans whether they’d like him to start sharing some of the music he’s already completed while he continues recovering.
Fans are being extremely supportive, with one writing: “I think artists forget we realise y’all are human and sharing what’s actually going on is very interesting and helps us become more attached to your art! Share away.”
“I’ve heard somewhere that mute lyricists write the best songs - keep going, Cody, you wild thing,” said another.
A third added: “We still love you. Recover. Your music can wait. Your vocal cords can’t.”
It’s a pretty scary situation for any singer, especially while working on a new album, but here’s hoping rest and recovery do the trick and he can get right back into it ASAP!
