Our very own Bryce Casey recently sat down with Dom Harvey for a two-hour podcast chat - and it’s one of the most raw, emotional, and revealing interviews he’s ever done.
What started as a chat about podcasts, broadcasting, and big-name interviews turned into one of the most honest long-form conversations we’ve heard from Bryce. He’s never been one to shy away from a laugh or a rogue yarn on The Morning Rumble, but we all know that beneath the banter, there’s a bloke who feels things deeply.
“I tell them I love them… Probably to the point where it’s punishing”
For anyone who’s listened to The Morning Rumble, you’ll know Bryce wears his heart on his sleeve. But in this chat, he took it to another level - opening up about how much his kids mean to him, and the fears that come with being a dad.
“I tell them ad nauseam how much I love them, to the point where it’s punishing,” Bryce said. “It gets me emotional thinking about it. I just… I never want anything bad to happen to them,” Bryce said while getting visibly emotional.
And it’s not just love - it’s fear, too.
Speaking about what he’s scared of, Bryce said, “it definitely is death for me… I fucking hate death, and I hate the idea of not being there for them. I’d never want them to not be able to ask for help if they needed it… I’ve obviously had people close to me and in my family who have taken their life, and the thought of it, that’s really scary.”
Bryce also spoke about how experiencing his own personal loss has shaped how he parents, reminding him of the importance of talking about feelings with his two young boys, and showing them it’s okay to cry.
“We fell pregnant, then obviously we lost our first one, which was brutal.”
Bryce also opened up about the painful journey he and his wife, Sharyn, went through to become parents - suffering three miscarriages before finally welcoming their first son, Tyson.
“I always wanted to be a dad, and we thought it would just be that classic easy, ya know…” he said. “We fell pregnant, then obviously we lost our first one, which was brutal.”
Bryce recalled the heartbreak of walking into ultrasound appointments after that first loss.
“It’s a dread going to those because you didn’t want to get the bad news that you’d got previously. I remember there was a lady that did one in particular, lovely lady, turned it on and the heartbeat had gone… I just remember even seeing the disappointment in her face. That’s brutal, man… We cried a lot.”
After their third loss, a breakthrough finally came thanks to an obstetrician named Ammar.
“He essentially was like, ‘If you don’t mind, I wouldn’t mind having a look at something else while I’m here. I think I know what it might be.’ In a super simple way, he said, ‘Once I snip that, it’s going to be a full over. Your bun’s going to cook and you’re going to have a little boy.’ And he worded it to us almost as simply as that. At that point, we’re like, ‘Whatever, mate.’"
Ammar snipped what he needed to and then, Sharyn and Bryce’s son Tyson came along. A few years later, their second son Reuben, whose middle name is Ammar, came along.
“I have no greater supporter than Sharyn”
Bryce couldn’t talk about family without talking about Sharyn. The two of them have been labeled a “radio power couple,” but Bryce is quick to point out it’s more about loyalty, support, and shared passion than any flashy title.
“I have no greater supporter on my side than her,” he said. “She gets what I’m talking about, she understands the job, and she’s incredibly loyal. We don’t fight heaps, but when we do… it’s all go. We both have fire in us for sure.”
Behind the mic, they’ve faced their challenges, but it’s clear Sharyn is both his anchor and his biggest champion.
Bryce’s career at The Rock
Of course, it wouldn’t be Bryce without a few yarns about life behind the mic. He shared stories about his early influences, mentors, and the grind it took to get where he is today.
He credits the likes of Bomber and James Coleman from Channel Z and his love of music as the sparks that lit his radio fire. In the early days, Bryce was relentless, constantly “punishing” Brad the Boss for a shot, pulling midnight-to-dawn shifts, and soaking up everything he could from announcers on The Rock at the time, like Green Man and Jono.
“I wanted to be like them. Greenman and Jono were two people I was inspired and impressed by.”
Reflecting on his career, Bryce says he “cannot overstate, with all genuine-ness” what a privilege it is to do what he does at The Rock.
Elsewhere in the chat, Bryce talked about what radio is like behind-the-scenes, including what it’s like working with Mel, Rog and Mulls. He also had a yarn about the best and worst interviews he’s ever done, golfing adventures, his journey with mental health advocacy, regrets, life lessons, self-improvement, and so much more.
As Dom said, “If you’re a Bryce fan, you’ll see a whole new side of him here.”
It's worth a listen. You can watch the full interview here.
