Bruce Springsteen headlined Tom Morello’s Power to the People festival in Columbia, Maryland over the weekend, wrapping up a stacked night of protest songs, massive collaborations and surprise guests.
Springsteen largely ditched his own catalogue for the occasion, with ‘Streets of Minneapolis’ the only original song in his set.
Instead, The Boss went digging through some suitably rebellious classics, bringing out Joan Baez for Bob Dylan’s ‘Chimes of Freedom’, before Dave Matthews and Nathaniel Rateliff joined him for Creedence Clearwater Revival’s ‘Fortunate Son’.
Then came a proper supergroup moment.
Dave Grohl, Matthews and Morello joined Springsteen for Neil Young’s ‘Rockin’ in the Free World’, marking the first time Springsteen had performed the song live since singing it alongside Young in 2004.
The whole thing eventually wrapped with a massive cast joining forces for John Lennon’s ‘Power to the People’ and Woody Guthrie’s ‘This Land Is Your Land’.
And Springsteen was hardly hogging all the guests.
Jack Black’s ‘Jack Sabbath’ brought Black Sabbath legend Geezer Butler onstage for ‘War Pigs’, while Soundgarden drummer Matt Cameron teamed up with Taylor Momsen, Mike McCready, Morello and Robbie Mangano for ‘Loud Love’, ‘Outshined’ and ‘Spoonman’.
Public Enemy also brought out Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian for ‘Bring the Noise’, while Morello’s own set became a revolving door of mates including Serj Tankian, DMC, Chuck D, B-Real, Flavor Flav and Grohl.
Grohl helped Morello close things out with KISS’ ‘Rock And Roll All Nite’, because apparently there weren't enough rock legends onstage already.
Power To The People was curated by Tom Morello, as a “celebration of peace, love, justice, music and community action” ahead of Election Day in America.
More to come on this huge festival.
