Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather is officially stepping back into the ring at 48 years old, but the internet isn't exactly buying the "competitive spirit" angle.
The undefeated champ has announced he’s coming out of retirement for an exhibition bout against Mike Tyson, and the consensus from everyone is pretty similar: He's probably broke.
The rumours aren’t coming out of thin air, with his recent track record suggesting things may be a bit tight.
Earlier this month, news dropped that NYC condo owners are suing Mayweather for allegedly owing more than $330,000 in unpaid rent.
He reportedly stopped paying his $100,000 monthly rent halfway through 2025, and despite a settlement to clear the debt, he still hasn't coughed up the full amount
A Miami jeweller is also allegedly chasing him for $1.375 million over some bling, claiming five of Floyd's cheques have bounced.
It’s clearly been a big 2026 for the guy, because he’s put his own lawsuit forward, suing Showtime Networks and the former president of Showtime Sports, for “helping facilitate an extended fraud scheme”, which left him short of around $340 million in earnings.
With all of this info, fans are not buying the exhibition match and reckon he’s doing it for a payday.
Even 50 Cent chimed in, allegedly posting, and then quickly deleting, a cheeky Instagram dig saying, “Broke gotta box till ya drop champ, ain't nobody gonna watch that s**t LOL.”
Fans on Reddit were quick to spit harsh words, suggesting his new nickname should be "The Broke Team”.
Others have slammed the Mike Tyson matchup as "elder abuse" and a "cash grab" that no one asked for.
The 48-year-old is 50-0 in his pro career, with career earnings of more than $1.1 billion. He’s known for flaunting sports bets paying out tens and thousands of dollars, and is among the wealthiest boxers in history.
Floyd’s legal team maintains that his business ventures are all part of a "long-term wealth strategy”, but with alleged five-figure rent bills stacking up, fans reckon he’s hoping a few rounds in the ring will help fix the balance sheet.
