Tommy DeCarlo, the vocalist who carried the music of Boston into the 21st century, has died at the age of 60.

DeCarlo passed away on March 9, 2026, following a battle with brain cancer.

His family confirmed the news in a statement shared online, revealing he had been diagnosed with the illness in September 2025 and fought the disease in the months that followed.

Born in Utica, New York, in 1965, DeCarlo was not originally a member of the famous rock group but rather a lifelong fan of the band’s music.

His unlikely journey into Boston began in 2007 after the death of the group’s original frontman, Brad Delp (who, coincidentally, passed away on the same day 19 years earlier).

While mourning Delp, DeCarlo recorded tribute videos of himself performing Boston songs and shared them online.

Those recordings eventually caught the attention of Boston founder and guitarist Tom Scholz. Impressed by the striking similarity between DeCarlo’s voice and Delp’s soaring vocals, Scholz invited him to audition.

DeCarlo soon became Boston’s touring lead singer, a role he would hold for nearly two decades.

During his time with the band, he performed many of Boston’s best-known songs for audiences around the world, including ‘More Than a Feeling’, ‘Peace of Mind’ and ‘Amanda’. He also contributed vocals to the band’s 2013 album ‘Life, Love & Hope’.

Aside from Boston, DeCarlo continued making music with his own project alongside his son, releasing original material and touring in recent years.

DeCarlo’s story, from devoted fan recording covers at home to fronting one of classic rock’s most recognisable bands, became one of the more remarkable journeys in modern rock history.

He is survived by his wife, Annie, and two children, Talia and Tommy Jr.
