Last week, rising Kiwi band Borderline treated the More FM office to an exclusive acoustic cover of Britney Spears’ iconic hit ‘...Baby One More Time’ for a 'High School Hits Live Session’.
Known for blending indie-pop with touches of rock and funk, Borderline are described by Rolling Stone as “fun, feel-good listen”. Safe to say they definitely made an impact on all in the office.
The Auckland four-piece, made up of Ben Glanfield, Matthew McFadden, Jackson Boswell and Max Harries, has been on a rapid upward trajectory. They’ve built a reputation for tight musicianship, catchy hooks and an undeniable on-stage chemistry that comes from being childhood friends.
The band put their own spin on one of Britney’s best, swapping a traditional drum set for a cajon and opting for warm guitars and smooth vocals. They transformed the track into something that felt both nostalgic and refreshing and funky.
During their visit, they also hung out with More FM Nights’ Steph Monks for her new ‘Inspiring Lyrics, Inspiring Questions’ segment, where she takes lyrics from an artist’s song and flips them into funny - and often quite random - interview questions.
Taking inspo from Borderline’s latest single ‘Watching It Burn’ where they sing “you call me a traitor”, Steph asked the boys which reality show they would thrive in.
Quick off the bat, Matthew cut in to suggest ‘The Bachelor’. All laughed before agreeing X-Factor would be the most fitting.
Whether it’s a light-hearted interview, original music or a reinvented classic, Borderline bring an energy that feels genuine, youthful and above all else, Kiwi.
Now embarking on a North American tour, we’re wishing the boys all the best and can’t wait to see what they do next!
