Bonnie Tyler has undergone emergency surgery in Portugal.

The Total Eclipse of the Heart singer was admitted to a hospital in Faro, in Portugal's Algarve region, where she owns a home.

News of the health scare was confirmed in a statement shared on her official website on Wednesday.

"We are very sorry to announce that Bonnie has been admitted to hospital in Faro, Portugal, where she has a home, for emergency intestinal surgery," the statement read. "The surgery went well, and she is now recuperating. We know that all of her family, friends, and fans will be concerned about this news and will be wishing her well for a full and swift recovery."

While no official reason for the surgery was shared, the Daily Mail reported that the singer suffered a perforated intestine after experiencing severe abdominal pain in recent days.

The health issues come as Tyler prepares for a busy year ahead, with a European tour scheduled to kick off in Malta on 22 May.

Just weeks before her hospitalisation, the Holding Out For a Hero star spoke about her overall good health and her desire to continue performing.

"I'm fit enough at the moment, touch wood, and I'm really enjoying doing the shows," she said in a March interview with Hello! magazine. "I'm still rocking on that stage with my wonderful band, and if you've got your health, you've got everything."
