Looks like the story of Bon Jovi is heading to the big screen.
According to Deadline, executives at Universal Pictures have won a bidding war for the rights to produce a biopic about the band the New Jersey band who turned stadium rock into a global juggernaut through the ‘80s and beyond.
Actor and writer Cody Brotter is set to pen the script, and he’ll have access to the band’s full music catalogue. That means classics like 1986’s You Give Love a Bad Name and Livin’ on a Prayer are expected to feature, alongside input from frontman Jon Bon Jovi himself.
At this stage, a director hasn’t been announced and casting details are still under wraps. Representatives for the band haven’t commented publicly on the project yet either.
The film is expected to follow the band’s formation in New Jersey back in 1983, where it all began. The current lineup includes Jon Bon Jovi, keyboardist David Bryan, drummer Tico Torres, guitarists John Shanks and Phil X, percussionist Everett Bradley, and bassist Hugh McDonald.
Original members also included late bassist Alec John Such and guitarist and songwriter Richie Sambora.
Their breakout moment came with the 1986 album Slippery When Wet, which launched massive hits and a huge world tour that cemented their place in rock history.
Bon Jovi were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018, and they’re still going strong. The band released their 16th studio album Forever in June 2024, their first since Jon Bon Jovi underwent vocal cord surgery in 2022.
Universal Pictures aren’t strangers to music biopics either. The studio previously backed films like Straight Outta Compton and 8 Mile, and they’re also behind the upcoming Michael Jackson biopic Michael.
So if you’ve ever belted out Livin’ on a Prayer after a few beers, this one might be worth keeping an eye on.
