‘Spectacular’: Black Sabbath to be honoured with huge mural in Birmingham ahead of final gig

Birmingham artist Mr Murals is currently working on the mural in preparation for the band's final gig.

Black Sabbath are being honoured with a 'spectacular' new piece of street art in their hometown of Birmingham ahead of their final concert next month.

The huge mural will bring together the four original members of Sabbath - Ozzy Osbourne, Geezer Butler, Tony Iommi and Bill Ward - and will tell the story of their humble beginnings in Aston, to becoming the heavy metal icons we know them as today.

Commissioned by Central BID Birmingham with support from Network Rail, the mural is set to be 36.5 meters large, and will cover the length of a large wall on Navigation Street in Birmingham’s CBD.

Local Birmingham artist known as Mr Murals is currently working on the mural, and says the piece is not only a tribute to the band, but to the “creative spirit of Birmingham.”

“The band’s influence is everywhere, from metal music to fashion to attitude. I wanted to create something powerful and raw, just like their sound, that people can stand in front of and feel the energy of Sabbath and of the city itself,” says Mr Murals.

Mr Murals has previously painted a black and white mural of Ozzy Osbourne on the wall of a tattoo shop in Digbeth, Birmingham, and was also the artist hired by Steven Knight to create a huge Peaky Blinders mural in the same suburb.

Birmingham’s New Street station manager Elizabeth Graham says the new mural will “provide a fantastic welcome to the thousands of fans arriving into the city ahead of Black Sabbath’s Villa Park gig.”

She continued, “We are only too pleased for our wall to be used for this artwork, and we can’t wait for the buzz and excitement in the build-up to what will be a weekend to remember.”

We’re excited to see how the mural looks when it’s finished up - but we’re even more excited to hear about Black Sabbath’s Villa Park gig, which is all set for July 5th.
