The latest season of Netflix’s hit show 'Black Mirror' has dropped, and Kiwis are noticing one particular detail in an episode featuring te reo Māori.

One eagle-eyed New Zealand fan of the show shared a screenshot from the episode on Reddit, writing: “Thought this was cool. 'Black Mirror' uses te reo Māori for planet names.”

Blink and you might miss it, but in the episode titled 'USS Callister: Into Infinity', you’ll spot some familiar names, including Matariki, Weka, Kākāpō, Pīāwai and more.

The names appear twice for a solid three seconds around the 17-minute mark of the new episode.

While it’s quick, we Kiwis always get a kick out of seeing anything New Zealand-related internationally - especially on telly.

Let alone the inclusion of Te Reo on such a massive Netflix show - it’s incredible!

Fans have been sharing their excitement in the Reddit thread, with one writing: “Ah, I watched that episode last night and missed that. That's awesome.”

Another added: “How neat!”

While it’s not yet clear who was behind the nod to Māori, many have suggested New Zealand creative company Wētā Workshop might’ve had a say in it.

They’ve previously worked on heaps of hit TV shows and movies including 'Severance', 'Gladiator II', 'Dune: Part Two', 'Black Panther: Wakanda Forever', and 'Thor: Ragnarok'.

As of now, there are no confirmed reports or official credits linking Wētā Workshop to the episode.

But let’s be honest – a lot of us are keen to know who made it happen.
