There are celebrity friendships… and then there are Billie Eilish and Justin Bieber kind of friendships, the ones that feel almost written by the universe.

A timeline that starts with teenage bedroom posters and ends on one of the biggest stages in the world - Coachella.

This weekend, Billie joined Justin on stage during ‘One Less Lonely Girl’ for his Weekend 2 headline set, and the full circle moment instantly sent fans and the internet into meltdown.

But in case you don’t understand all the lore that makes the moment so special, let’s rewind, shall we?

2014–2016: Billie’s ‘Belieber’ era

Before the Grammys, before the Oscars, before she was redefining pop, Billie Eilish was just another teenager, except her level of dedication to Justin Bieber was ELITE.

We’re talking full Belieber status. Wall to wall posters, deep cuts on repeat, and emotional reactions that her family has openly joked about for years.

Her fandom wasn’t casual, it was formative for her.

During her ‘The World’s a Little Blurry' 2021 doco, 12-year-old Billie said:

'cause like I’m worried that when I get a boyfriend, I won’t wanna be with him, because I actually love Justin Bieber more, and I can’t handle that

Billie also said, during her Carpool Karaoke with James Corden in 2020:

Do not surprise me with Justin Bieber, I can’t take it

2019: The internet makes it happen

Fast forward to Billie’s breakout year with the release of her album, ‘When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?’, and suddenly the industry was paying attention, including Justin himself.

The moment that broke the internet? Their first official meeting.

Billie actually first met her childhood idol at Coachella back in April 2019. The highly emotional, viral meeting occurred when Justin approached Billie during Ariana Grande’s set, resulting in a tearful hug and a shared dance between the two artists.

It wasn’t just a handshake and a photo op. Justin handled it gently, like someone fully aware he was meeting a younger version of his own fanbase. It was wholesome and instantly iconic.

Shown in the documentary, while still crying, Billie shared how she felt with her brother Finneas

Every time I would cry harder, he would squeeze me tighter

Shortly after, they dropped a remix of ‘Bad Guy’ together. A sort of symbolic passing-of-the-torch moment that blurred the line between idol and peer.

2020–2022: From idol to industry ally

As Billie’s career skyrocketed, Justin’s role subtly shifted. He wasn’t just the guy from the posters on her wall, he became a protector of sorts, openly saying he wanted to shield her from the darker sides of fame.

It’s a dynamic we don’t often see play out this publicly. A former idol turned industry big brother, navigating that transition in real time.

“I wanna let her do her thing," Justin told Zane Lowe in a 2020 interview.

And if she ever needs me, I’m gonna be there for her.

“I just want to protect her, I don't want her to lose it, I don’t want her to go through anything I went through, I don't wish that upon anybody, if she ever needs me, I’m just a call away.”

2023–2025: Mutual respect era

By this point, the relationship had evolved into something grounded and genuinely mutual. They weren’t constantly in headlines together, but when they did cross paths at award shows or backstage moments, you could see the happiness in both their faces.

Like two friends who don't see each other often, but when they're together, they pick right back up where they left off.

Coachella 2026: The ‘One Less Lonely Girl’ moment that changed everything

And then…came Coachella 2026.

During Justin Bieber’s set, fans were already on high alert for surprise guests, with a lot of people online predicting that this might happen, and they could only hope she would make an appearance.

But nothing could’ve prepared them for this level of full-circle storytelling.

Billie was brought on stage, not just as a collaborator, not just as a guest, but as the ‘One Less Lonely Girl.’

She became the most iconic ‘OLLG’, and to make things even better, it was Justin’s wifey, Hailey, who initiated the whole thing.

Billie was seen dancing and enjoying the show with Hailey and all her friends, not knowing what was about to happen, and whether she and Justin planned that or not, the surprise was there for everyone to witness.

For anyone who knows the Justin Bieber lore, ‘One Less Lonely Girl’ isn’t just a song. It’s a ritual. A fan fantasy. A moment designed for ‘the girl in the audience who loves him the most’

And through time, Billie proved that she'd earned that moment, and we couldn't think of anyone more fitting.

There’s something rare about a moment that feels both nostalgic and like growth at the same time. This was that.

It also tapped into something bigger. The idea that the people who inspire you can one day stand next to you, not above you.

Even the weekend one-goers came back and applauded Justin’s performance for weekend two, and couldn’t deny that the crowd and energy were also a lot better.
