A major blow to the Crusaders with All Blacks prop Tamaiti Williams ruled out of the rest of the 2026 Super Rugby season.

The 25 year-old is currently in hospital as he receives treatment for a serious infection in his back.

Williams has been diagnosed with discitis, an infection in one of the discs in his spine.

He’ll be closely monitored by medical staff until his condition is stable enough for him to return home.

Williams has spoken from hospital about how it all unfolded.

“I’ve had a sore back for a couple of weeks and had to come in for some scans and blood tests,” Williams says.

“They found an infection in my back called discitis, which means I’m going to be on antibiotics for a pretty long time. Unfortunately, my Crusade for 2026 is over.”

Whether Williams will be ready to play in the All Blacks’ first test of the year against France in Christchurch on July 4th remains unclear.

Despite the set-back, the 27-test front-rower is remaining positive.

“I’m feeling gutted, but I’m also grateful that the news isn’t as bad as what it could be,” he says.

“Being in hospital, you see a lot, and it makes you appreciate that this place is here to save us. I’ve been told I’m going to make a 100 percent recovery, so I’m thankful for that.”

The Crusaders will continue to support Williams throughout his recovery and thank fans for their messages during this time.
